Age of Technological Generation

The Age of Technological Generation is an era in which the continual production of new expressions, meanings, and possibilities through interactions between humans and nonhuman computational systems becomes a central operating principle of media culture, beyond the reproduction of existing objects or the editing of human-produced materials.

Canonical definition

The Age of Technological Generation is a media-historical phase in which the dominant operating logic of media moves beyond reproduction and editing toward probabilistic generation and recursive human–nonhuman interaction, so that not only expressive outcomes but the very process by which meaning is formed becomes technologically co-constituted.

Problem statement

The central problem of technological reproduction is the relation between original and copy. Photography, film, recorded sound, and printing convert existing objects into repeatable forms. Aesthetic questions therefore concentrate on originality, reproducibility, and transformations of aura.
