Friction Transparency

Friction Transparency is a relational and design principle that does not unconditionally eliminate discrepancies, uncertainties, and conflicts arising in human–technology interaction, but reveals where and why they occur so that human beings can perceive and interpret them.

Friction Transparency is a relational design principle that preserves human judgment and meaning-making by rendering discrepancies and uncertainties in human–technology relations visible in interpretable form instead of unconditionally maximizing technological seamlessness.

마찰의 투명성은 기술적 매끄러움을 무조건 극대화하는 대신 인간–기술 관계에서 발생하는 불일치와 불확실성을 해석 가능한 형태로 가시화함으로써 인간의 판단과 의미 생성 능력을 보존하는 관계적 설계 원리이다.
Problem statement
Complete personalization can produce an environment in which users no longer need to interpret for themselves. Such seamlessness, however, risks self-echo, atrophy of interpretive capacity, and distortion of memory. Meaningful human–AI relations therefore require a degree of interpretive friction. PLM research distinguishes epistemic, temporal, and affective friction.
